THE FIRST DISCUSSION OF THE IE FACULTY/STUDENT HUMANITIES INITIATIVE

IE_University_courtyard_300px [1]Our first topic of discussion will focus on whether boundaries should be placed on the ‘freedom of speech’ where religious beliefs and sensitivities are concerned and on how we would define such boundaries, even if they are deemed necessary.  Accordingly, we will debate whether the right to ‘freedom of speech’ has led to abuses in the contemporary European world, whether with respect to Europe’s own Christian traditions and communities or vis-a-vis the sentiments of its religious minorities.  This event is meant as the first in a series of similar such events during the course of the year, others of which will continue to explore the theme of ‘the freedom of speech’ in contemporary European culture, for example, with respect to artistic activity or the tragic events of the European past.  Through these events and our discussions, we hope not only to illuminate the pluralism and range of opinions within the student body, but to enable students to appreciate and learn from these differences and to arrive thereby at a more informed and critical understanding of themselves and our world.  Hence, through our collective critical discussion, we want, as students at IE, to take responsibility for our own education and development.  This is our vision of ‘Humanities’ at IE and we ask you to participate and help us make it a reality.

A modest catering of cheese and wine will follow the event

The meeting will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 18:30 in Refectorio 1 (Campus de Santa Cruz La Real)
