Arantza de Areilza, decana de IE School of Arts & Humanities, nos cuenta en esta entrevista varios aspectos sobre su vida profesional, sobre IE School of Arts & Humanities y sobre lo que le gusta hacer fuera del IE.

¿De dónde eres, cuál es tu formación, tu trayectoria profesional?

Me considero ciudadana del mundo aunque nací en tierra de raigambre vasca. Estudié Relaciones Internacionales en España, Francia, Alemania y EE.UU buscando entender mejor el mundo que me rodea desde una perspectiva global. Antes de unirme al IE, trabajé en Bosnia para Naciones Unidas justo después de la guerra, en el Parlamento Europeo, en la Asociación de Periodistas Europeos y en la Fundación Consejo España – EE.UU.

¿Cómo llegaste al IE? En avión desde Washington DC

Como es tu día a día en el IE? Cambiante y ameno. Cada día es una nueva oportunidad para innovar, para crear algo, para poner en marcha una idea.

¿Cuál es la misión de IE School of Arts & Humanities?

La escuela trabaja en dos campos muy distintos: Las Humanidades y las Relaciones Internacionales.

La misión de IE School of Arts and Humanities es potenciar las capacidades individuales de las alumnos con el fin de enseñarles a entender la complejidad del mundo que nos rodea. Les enseñamos a analizar de forma amplia y profunda, a pensar de forma crítica, a distinguir lo que es significativo de lo que no lo es, a razonar empíricamente, a expresarse con claridad y a conectar ideas de forma creativa. Nos gustaría que nuestros alumnos fuesen capaces de percibir y ser responsables de las consecuencias intelectuales, sociales y éticas de sus actos y sus pensamientos. Contribuimos a formar ciudadanos con visión global, políglotos, con un claro sentido ético y responsable, capaces de gestionar sus propias expectativas profesionales y personales, y protagonistas de la creación de los nuevos valores impulsores del cambio necesarios a toda sociedad moderna.
¿Cuáles son los temas tratados en los cursos de Humanidades en IE?

Las Humanidades son uno de los valores principales del IE. Por lo tanto, las Humanidades están presentes en la totalidad de la oferta académica del IE tanto en grado como en postgrado. Las Humanidades se imparten en distintos formatos según los programas: asignaturas obligatorias de análisis crítico en el IMBA y el MIM, cursos electivos sobre Profit vs prosperity, las claves de la cultura contemporánea o cultura y globalización; seminarios como el World Awareness Seminar donde se tratan temas de cultura y sociedad de grandes culturas que coinciden con mercados importantes que nuestros alumnos tendrán que tratar como China, , Japón, India, Brasil, Mundo Islámico etc. En este seminario se busca extender la mirada del alumno más allá de los movimientos empresariales, políticos o económicos adentrándonos en la historia, la religión, la sociología y los valores que conforman esas sociedades, conocimientos que ayudarán al alumno a entender mejor los diferentes entornos y mentalidades.

En el grado impartimos cursos obligatorios de Historia del Pensamiento como asignatura troncal a todos los programas y una multitud de seminarios relacionados que ofrecemos como actividades extracurriculares.

Las Humanidades también tienen programación propia en la Asociación de Antiguos Alumnos del IE y se han incorporado paulatinamente a la oferta académica de Executive Education tras el éxito del programa de alta dirección realizado para PubliEspaña y Telecinco.

Asimismo, IE School of Arts and Humanities elabora una newsletter electrónica multilingüe en Artes Liberales donde se propone una agenda cultural internacional y se publican artículos de nuestro claustro en Humanidades. A esto se suma el blog en Artes y Humanidades de la Escuela (http://artshumanities.blogs.ie.edu/ ) que se actualiza a diario.

¿Qué aportan las Humanidades a la gestión empresarial?

La metodología proporcionada por las Humanidades ayuda a los alumnos a aprender a analizar y razonar de forma crítica, fomenta la imaginación y la creatividad y contribuye a la formación de un espíritu crítico aplicable a cualquier campo de conocimiento. Por lo tanto, ayuda al alumno a descubrirse como persona y potenciar sus particularidades, así como a desarrollar un criterio propio.

¿Cómo debe ser el directivo del siglo XXI, qué capacidades y habilidades debe tener?

Hoy en día, las empresas ya no funcionan como orquestas filarmónicas sino como bandas de jazz. Se buscan músicos capaces de componer, improvisar y crear melodías propias.

¿A qué dedicas tu tiempo libre?

A leer, viajar y pasarlo bien con mis amigos.

Where are you from, what is your academic background, and where did you work before you came to IE?

I consider myself a citizen of the world although I have Basque roots. I studied international relations in Spain, France, Germany and the US, seeking to better understand the world around me, from a global perspective. Before joining IE I worked in Bosnia for the United Nations just after the war, in the European Parliament, in the Association of European Journalists, and in the Consejo España – Estados Unidos.

How did you come to IE?

What is your day-to-day like at IE?

Forever changing and pleasant. Each day is a new opportunity to innovate, to create something, or to put an idea into practice.

What is the most rewarding part of your work?

The freedom I have to be creative

The opportunity to make a contribution toward improving international education.

What is the mission of the IE School of Arts and Humanities?

The school works in two very different fields: Humanities and International Relations.

The mission of IE School of Arts and Humanities is to foster the individual skills of students, to teach them to understand the complexity of the world we live in. We equip them with a capacity for broad and deep analysis, critical thinking, empirical reasoning, and we teach them to distinguish what is meaningful and what isn’t, to express themselves clearly and to connect ideas in a creative fashion. We would like our students to be able to gauge the intellectual, social and ethical consequences of their acts and thoughts, and to take responsibility for them. We help to shape citizens who are multilingual, with global vision, a clear sense of ethics and responsibility, capable of managing their professional and personal aspirations, while playing a key role in the creation of new values that promote the change that every modern society needs.

What is the role of Humanities courses at IE?

Humanities are one of IE’s core values. Hence, humanities are present in all IE’s programs, at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Humanities are taught in different formats depending on the program: there are core subjects of critical analysis in the IMBA and the MIM, and elective courses on profit vs. prosperity, keys to contemporary culture or culture and globalization. Then there are seminars like the World Awareness Seminar, which addresses issues related to the culture and major societies such as China, Japan, India, Brazil, the Islamic world, etc. This particular seminar seeks to take the students beyond business, political or economic considerations, to gain greater insights through history, religion, sociology and the values that form the base of these societies, thus furnishing students with a greater understanding of different environments and mindsets.

The degree program includes mandatory courses on the history of thought as a core subject for all programs, coupled with a large range of related seminars offered as extracurricular activities.

Humanities also have their own programs within IE’s Alumni Association and are gradually being integrated into the program portfolio of the Executive Education Unit following the success of the senior management program run for PubliEspaña and Telecinco.

Moreover, IE School of Arts and Humanities issues a multilingual electronic liberal arts newsletter, featuring an international cultural agenda and articles by our humanities faculty. The School also runs a blog on arts and Humanities (http://artshumanities.blogs.ie.edu/ ) which is updated on a daily basis.

What can Humanities do for business management?

The methodology implemented by Humanities helps students to learn, examine and reason in a critical manner, thus fostering imagination and creativity, and shaping a critical spirit that can be applied to any field of knowledge. Hence, it helps students to discover themselves on a personal level and to strengthen their fortes, as well as to develop their own criteria.

What should the 21st century executive be like? What kind of skill set is needed?

Today’s firms do not work like a philharmonic orchestra, but rather like jazz bands. They seek musicians who can compose, improvise and create their own music.

What do you do in your spare time?

I read, travel and enjoy being with my friends.
