A red spiralling tower made of structural steel by artist Anish Kapoor will loom over London’s 2012 Olympic Games.

The tower incorporates the Olympic rings in its spirals. People can walk up it or take the elevator for a view of the Olympic stadiums in eastern London where most of the Games are to be staged.

“Anish Kapoor’s inspired artwork will truly encapsulate the energy and spirit of London during the Games and, as such, will become the perfect iconic cultural legacy,” London Mayor Boris Johnson said.

Due to be completed by the end of 2011, the Orbit will dwarf its neighbours, including the main stadium and the Zaha Hadid-designed aquatics centre.
