Travesías is a video installation using a LED screen, created especially for the atrium of the Justus Lipsius building of the European Union Council. The work will be exhibited from January to June of 2010, coinciding with the Spanish Presidency of the European Union.

The sculptural screen, which is 33 meters long and 1.65 meters wide, has an undulating shape and includes a full loop. The screen, long and thin, resembles a pathway suspended in mid air.

The screen displays videos of people walking or crawling, taken with an overhead camera. The images mirror the constant flow of people that cross the atrium. The workers, politicians, advisers and visitors of the European Council animate the building and, consequently, the European project.

The sinuous forms of the installation create interesting perspectives, including the appearance and disappearance of figures through the length of the screen. The screen is also reflected on the façades and the glass ceiling of the atrium, generating curious visual effects.

In words of Daniel Canogar (Madrid, 1964), "Travesías is a response to the profound territorial, economic and social transformations that the European Union has undergone in the last few years. This permanent state of transition inspired me to create a passage in the air that suggests vertigo, risk and also delight. Travesías seeks to create a daring version of the passage through the atrium, reminding the users and visitors of the building of the obstacles, uncertainties and effort required to advance in times of transition, and the satisfaction of discovering new paths.

Travesías es una video-instalación realizada con una pantalla de LEDS, creada especialmente para el atrio del edificio Justus Lipsius del Consejo de Europa. La obra permanecerá expuesta de enero a junio del 2010, coincidiendo con la Presidencia Española de la UE.

La pantalla escultórica, de 33 metros de largo por 1,65 de ancho, traza en el aire una forma ondulante con bucle incluido. La pantalla, alargada y estrecha, toma la apariencia de un enrevesado camino suspendido en el aire.

En la pantalla se pueden ver imágenes de multitud de personas andando o arrastrándose en el suelo, captadas desde arriba con una cámara cenital. Las imágenes funcionan como un espejo del constante flujo de personas que atraviesan el atrio. Los trabajadores, políticos, técnicos y visitantes del Consejo de Europa son los que dan vida al edificio y, en consecuencia, al proyecto europeo.

Las formas sinuosas de la pantalla de LEDS crean interesantes perspectivas, con la aparición y desaparición de las figuras a lo largo del recorrido. La pantalla, además, queda reflejada en las fachadas y el techo de cristal del atrio, generando curiosos efectos visuales.

En palabras de Daniel Canogar (Madrid, 1964), "Travesías surge como respuesta a las profundas transformaciones territoriales, económicas y sociales que ha sufrido la Unión Europea en los últimos años. Este permanente estado de transición me inspiró a crear un audaz camino aéreo que sugiera vértigo, riesgo y también deleite. Travesías busca crear una versión atrevida del transitar por el atrio, queriendo recordar a los usuarios y visitantes del edificio de los obstáculos, incertidumbres y esfuerzo requerido para avanzar en momentos de transición, y la satisfacción de descubrir nuevos caminos".
