On Wednesday, October 7th, 2009, the IE School of Arts and Humanities inaugurated the second edition of its Master in International Relations.

Dean Arantza de Areilza opened the ceremony by talking about the ambitious mission of the IE School of Arts and Humanities, and describing the impressive profile of the new students.
Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo, Director of the Master in International Relations, spoke about the importance of a degree in international relations in today's world, and how important it was to develop a multi-cultural, sophisticated perspective about the world that we live in.
Marcelino Oreja gave the keynote address. Mr. Oreja is a jurist, politician, businessman, and Spanish diplomat. He served as Minister of External Affairs (1976-1980), Secretary General for the Council of Europe (1984-1989), and as European Commissioner (1994-1999). He is also a member of the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences. He spoke about Turkey and it's prospect for entering into the European Union.
Waya Quiviger, Associate Director of the Master in International Relations, and Camila Úribe, Associate Director of Admissions outlined the competitive selection process, and gave the students a practical sense of what the program would be like.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, the new students joined the IE Community for a welcome cocktail.

(CNN) — President Obama was awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.
Less than nine months into his presidency, Barack Obama has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.
The first African-American to win the White House, Obama was praised by the Norweigan Nobel Committee for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."
"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."
The committee also said Obama has "created a new climate in international politics."
In his short time in office, Obama has acted on a wide range of issues from the economy to terrorism and wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Obama is the fourth U.S. president to receive the award, joining presidents Jimmy Carter, Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt.
This year's peace prize nominees included 172 people and 33 organizations. The committee does not release the names of the nominees.

Escribo esto mientras Waya discute con dos alumnos del MIR, Macarena contesta a un par de mails y en la calle empieza a asomar el sol de octubre. Releo tu artÃculo y, Julián, me asalta una sensación de mareo. ¿Por qué? Porque no sé adónde quieres ir a parar.
Supongo que simplemente lo que quieres decir es que Arte es todo aquello a lo que llamamos "Arte" y Literatura es todo aquello a lo que llamamos "Literatura": discutir sus propiedades es inútil, pues no son las propiedades las que hacen el nombre sino el nombre el que hace las propiedades. Arrimando el ascua a mi sardina, recuerdo lo que decÃa Cela en uno de aquellos momentos de desparpajo fulminante que le caracterizaban: "Novela es todo aquello que lleva debajo el rótulo novela."
En el fondo, quizás la discusión, si hay tal, esté mal planteada. Quizás sea inexacto discutir que Millenium sea literatura. Desde luego es evidente que se trata de un texto escrito (una de las acepciones de la palabra literatura), que se vende en librerÃas (aunque también en librerÃas se venden portaminas y libretas, mapas y cuadernos de anillas), es cierto que está lanzado por editoriales (aunque las editoriales también lanzan libros de cocina y libros de autoayuda). Pero bueno, concedamos que Millenium es literatura. Al menos en un sentido amplio.
Desde luego, Millenium , al menos, es un libro. Bueno, tres. Sin embargo, de las relaciones entre significante y significado está el mundo del pensamiento lleno. Una relación variable, fluctuante, arbitraria. Los libros pudieran, sin que se produjese hecatombe alguna, ser llamados pacos o cuchillos. El mundo seguirÃa funcionando perfectamente.

Querido Julián,
Creo que no estás nada en contra de mi post ni contra el de Blanca. Al final todos estamos aquà hablando de Humanidades como algo cercano y parte de la vida cotidiana de cualquier persona. Aunque te agradezco la polémica que siempre es divertida, me pierdo un poquito con tu razonamiento.
Tal y como tú señalas, no considero que la única propiedad del Arte sea su capacidad de "enseñar", y no es mi intención justificarlo sino más bien mostrar cómo su valor para la educación hace que sea especialmente interesante hoy en dÃa. Creo que si el Arte se utilizara en la enseñanza, a cualquier edad, como herramienta para crear un pensamiento crÃtico y abierto otro gallo cantarÃa. Algo tan necesario con la abundancia de adoctrinamientos especializados y pensadores poco flexibles a ideas diferentes o nuevas.
Lo que sà me sorprende bastante es tu frase de que "Arte es lo que está en las galerÃas y Literatura aquello que te capacita para que las librerÃas te compren". Desde luego que el Arte y la Literatura existen desde mucho antes, de aquà viene su poder, y no sé si tu visión es materialista al definirlos como "productos previos". ¿Producto en el sentido de dar beneficios materiales? Desde luego Larsson da beneficios materiales y el mercado del arte vende algunas obras a precios astronómicos, ¿quiere esto decir que es Arte? No lo creo, del mismo modo que no fueron arte muchos de los cuadros que se vendieron a altos precios en los Salones del s.XIX de unos artistas cuyos nombres ya ni recordamos.
